The perpetual calendar mechanism enables the date display to take into account the different lengths of the months automatically, including leap years: it is a mechanism based on a cam, a so-called ?twelve-cam? (which completes one rotation every 12 months), and a wheel called the ?forty-eight? (which completes one rotation every forty-eight months, or four years) enabling the inclusion of 29th February, each leap year.
