A. Lange & Sohne Watches
In 1845, the original Lange company was founded by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Dresden, Germany. For 100 years, A. Lange & Sohne pocket watches were among the most coveted timepieces in the world. However, after World War II, the Soviets seized the property of the company, and the brand ceased to exist. But, in 1990, after the collapse of the East German government, the brand was revived thanks to Adolph Lange's great-grandson, Walter Lange. And, with some help from a consortium of Swiss watch manufacturers, such as IWC, he restored the company's operations. Today, A. Lange & Sohne is in the upper echelon of luxury watchmakers, along with Swiss watchmakers such as Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin.
A true testament to the quality of their watches, all A. Lange & Sohne watches are mechanical, rather than quartz operated. And, with the exception of a few special edition watches, all A. Lange & Sohne watches are made of precious metals (gold or platinum) rather than steel. All movements are also developed, manufactured, and assembled in-house. Always a pioneer in watchmaking technology, A. Lange & Sohne was one of the first to develop the 'double split chronograph', which enables a wearer to time two events for up to 30 minutes. Today, A. Lange and Sohne continues to create horological masterpieces, albeit in very limited quantities.
