Alberto Santos Dumont was well-known all over the world as the pioneer of aviation in Europe, who flew in France and other parts of Europe in some of the initial prototypes of airplanes. Cartier took up a challenge to design a wristwatch with a leather strap specifically for his friend after the aviator complained at the difficulties he had while trying to find out the time using his pocket watch during the flights.

The Cartier Santos Dumont comes in two sizes (small and large) in yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold on a leather strap. Some models are also embellished with diamonds. The Cartier Santos Dumont is equipped with a quartz movement in the diamond models and small plain models, and a manual-winding mechanical movement in the large plain models, and is water resistant up to a depth of 30 meters.
